Shane Victorino, Clay Buchholz and Daniel Murphy featured in tonight's Extreme Makeover: Home Edition "Rise and Honor" Veterans Day Special
Special will benefit Major League Baseball's Welcome Back Veterans Program and other veteran-serving organizations
Shane Victorino of the Philadelphia Phillies, Clay Buchholz of the Boston Red Sox and Daniel Murphy of the New York Mets will join the Entertainment Industry Foundation and a cast of celebrities in tonight's one-hour Extreme Makeover: Home Edition "Rise and Honor" A Veterans Day Special airing on ABC at 8:00 p.m. Eastern. The special will honor U.S. veterans and their families and encourage viewers to visit RiseandHonor.org where they can make a donation to benefit veteran-serving organizations, including MLB's Welcome Back Veterans program. Welcome Back Veterans is designed to support returning Iraq and Afghanistan veterans and their families make a successful transition to civilian life.
Featured in tonight's special, Victorino, Buccholz and Murphy along with EM:HE host Ty Pennington and special co-host singer Jewel, traveled just outside Joplin, Missouri for a celebratory event that featured an audience of active-duty service members and veterans in addition to a live musical performance by Jewel.
Throughout the episode, celebrities will shine a light on issues veterans face after serving in the military, as well as the strengths and skills returning veterans bring to the work force and their communities. In addition to the MLB players, the Veterans Day special will include appearances by Whoopi Goldberg, George Lopez, J.R. Martinez, Rachael Ray, Sherri Shepherd and Robin Williams.
Welcome Back Veterans (WelcomeBackVeterans.org) is an MLB Charities initiative, in partnership with the Robert R. McCormick Foundation, which is supported by MLB Advanced Media and MLB Network. Welcome Back Veterans has distributed $12 million in grants to non-profit agencies targeting veterans' and their families' greatest needs, focusing on treatment and research of PTSD and TBI. Beneficiaries include the Red Sox Foundation and Massachusetts General Hospital Home Base Program, which is dedicated to providing free and confidential clinical care and support services to veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. Funds have been contributed by MLB and McCormick Foundation, including funds raised through auctions of game-used products and a donation of sales from New Era Stars & Stripes caps.
