PHILADELPHIA -- Placido Polanco did not start for the second consecutive game because of a bruised left knee.
Polanco said before Friday's series opener against Boston he could play if needed, but he is not 100 percent. The third baseman thought he would be available to pinch-hit, but playing in the field would be difficult.
"It's getting better," Polanco said.
Report: Oswalt throws bullpen session for Phils
PHILADELPHIA -- The Phillies have more interest in Roy Oswalt than they let on.
FOXSports.com reported Friday that Oswalt, who remains a free agent, threw bullpen sessions for the Phillies and Red Sox last week.
Asked Wednesday if he knew Oswalt was throwing or what kind of shape he might be in, general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said, "We think he's throwing. I guess he is."
Right-hander Vance Worley is on the disabled list with inflammation in his right elbow. The Phillies said they do not think it is serious, but if it is worse than they have said and he misses an extended period of time, they could sign Oswalt to rejoin the rotation.
Diekman struggles in second big league outing
PHILADELPHIA -- Jake Diekman looked spectacular in his big league debut Tuesday.
His second appearance Thursday? Not so much.
Diekman allowed one hit, four runs and two walks in two-thirds of an inning in an 8-7 victory over the Cubs at Wrigley Field. That followed a masterful performance in a 4-3 victory over the Astros on Tuesday, when he struck out three of the four batters he faced in 1 1/3 frames.
"I was trying to pick too many corners and got myself into trouble pretty fast," Diekman said Friday at Citizens Bank Park. "It was bad."
He paused for a moment before he chuckled and added, "After my debut, I had like 75 text messages. Last night, I had, like four. I'm texting all my friends like, 'What? You can't say anything now? This is a joke.' Crickets."
