Atlanta Braves to host a special night to honor Chipper Jones
Pregame celebration to take place on Friday, September 28
To honor their longtime third baseman, Chipper Jones, the Atlanta Braves will host a special night on Friday, September 28 during his final regular season homestand.
Details for the night will be unveiled in the coming weeks, but a very special pregame ceremony is planned.
“In this day and age it is extremely rare that a player of Chipper’s stature remains with one team for his entire career,” said Atlanta Braves President John Schuerholz. “We are most fortunate and especially honored to have had him in a Braves uniform for his remarkable 20-year career and we will show him how much he has meant to us.”
In addition to this special night, the Atlanta Braves will unveil a special commemorative souvenir program during the New York Mets series beginning Friday, July 13. The program features first-person articles from his parents, his childhood friend and current agent, BB Abbott, Bobby Cox, Tony DeMacio, who scouted and signed Chipper to his first contract and his high school coach, Don Suriano.
Quotes from fellow teammates, former teammates, current and former MLB players, celebrities, dignitaries and a few very special surprises are featured throughout the publication. Here is a sampling:
- Legendary switch-hitter Pete Rose – “Chipper was the type of player I wish I could have competed against. He was an aggressive player as well as being one of the best all-around players on both offense and defense.”
- Dodgers broadcaster Vin Scully – “I admire him, I respect him, and I regret that he finally has to hang it up.”
- Country music star Luke Bryan – “Chipper Jones is the complete embodiment of loyalty, honor, determination and baseball perfection.”
- Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Cole Hamels – “I’ll be very happy when he’s out of the league so I don’t have to face him. I have a lot of respect for him, and he’s a great guy off the field.”
Additional features in the commemorative program include Chipper's retirement bucket list, how he has become one of the best switch hitters in MLB history, and his influence on current teammates and more.
