BOSTON – Following tonight’s game at Boston, the Chicago White Sox optioned right-handed pitcher Jhan Mariñez (“Yahn ma-REEN-yez”) to Class AAA Charlotte.
Mariñez, 23, was recalled from Charlotte on July 13. He made his White Sox debut that night at Kansas City, throwing 1.2 scoreless IP in relief as the Sox posted a 9-8 victory in 14 innings. He was one of eight rookie pitchers used by Chicago in the game.
Mariñez is 2-2 with a 3.14 ERA (15 ER/43.0 IP) and 47 strikeouts in 26 relief appearances with Charlotte this season. The 6-foot-1, 200-pounder has limited opponents to a .182 (28-154) average, third-lowest among International League relievers, and has thrown 13.0 consecutive scoreless IP over his last six outings.
The White Sox will make a corresponding roster move prior to tomorrow night’s game at Boston.
