ANAHEIM -- The Angels still need help to reach the playoffs.

But at the very least, they're staying alive.

With a 4-1 win on Sunday, the Angels swept the American League Central-leading White Sox at home to stay 2 1/2 games back of the Athletics for the second AL Wild Card spot after Oakland earned a 5-4 win at Yankee Stadium. Nine games remain -- three against the Mariners at home, then six on the road in Texas and Seattle -- and the Angels are taking solace in the fact Oakland has seven games remaining against the first-place Rangers.

"We have to try to stay where we've been, just like I said, going out there with the mentality of we're going to win," Angels ace Jered Weaver said. "And if our starting pitching keeps doing what they're doing and our offense comes in, and has a sudden burst like they did in the sixth [on Sunday], and our bullpen comes in and shuts it down, we're going to be in a good spot. We can't look into it too much. We just have to try to keep winning."

Magic numbers
To calculate a team's magic number, take the number of games it has remaining and add one. Then subtract the difference in the number of losses between that team and its closest pursuer.

Tiebreaker scenarios
A tiebreaker game will be played to determine a division winner, even if the tied clubs are assured of participating in the postseason. If a division championship tiebreaker is necessary, the head-to-head record between the clubs will determine home-field advantage. If the head-to-head record is tied, then the division record will be the next tiebreaker.

If two clubs are tied for the two Wild Card berths, home-field advantage will be determined by the head-to-head record between the clubs. If the head-to-head record is tied, then the division record will be the next tiebreaker.
