Williams successful in challenge to end inning
Nationals manager prompts overturned call after Cubs' Coghlan was ruled safe
CHICAGO -- Nationals manager Matt Williams won a challenge on a close play at first base with two outs in the fifth inning Friday at Wrigley Field.
With the Cubs leading, 4-2, and no runners on base, Chicago left fielder Chris Coghlan chopped a slow roller to shortstop. Ian Desmond charged and fired to first, where Adam LaRoche picked the ball on one hop as Coghlan dove headfirst for the bag.
Coghlan was initially called safe, but after Williams came out to make his challenge, the call was overturned after a brief review.
Desmond's play finished a 1-2-3 inning for Nats starter Tanner Roark, just his second of the game to that point.
