Giants get split on pair of challenges
Safe call in favor of Reds at first base overturned; out call on Blanco stands
SAN FRANCISCO -- With two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning Saturday night, Matt Cain had appeared to retire the Reds in order. First-base umpire D.J. Reyburn originally ruled otherwise.
Jay Bruce grounded into the Giants' shift. Brandon Crawford corralled the ball in shallow right and threw it to first base. Reyburn called Bruce safe, with the thought being Crawford's throw pulled first baseman Adam Duvall off the bag. Giants manager Bruce Bochy called for a replay review.
After video review, the call was overturned, so Bruce was out, ending the inning.
Two innings later, Bochy issued a second challenge. Gregor Blanco attempted to steal second base, and second-base umpire Pat Hoberg ruled Blanco out. After video review, it was determined the call stands.
Bochy is now 14-for-20 in challenge attempts this season.
