Altuve needs help as All-Star voting winds down
MLB's hit leader ranks fourth in latest ballot update at second base
HOUSTON -- It's going to take a late rally to get Astros second baseman Jose Altuve into the starting lineup in the All-Star Game.
Altuve entered Monday leading the Major Leagues with 116 hits and 35 multi-hit games and pacing the American League with a .347 batting average and a career-high 36 stolen bases, including a franchise record six consecutive games with a steal. He had recorded multiple steals in four games entering Monday, becoming the first player in nearly 100 years to do that.
But in the latest round of fan voting released Monday, Altuve was fourth among AL second baseman with 1,312,805 votes, trailing Robinson Cano of the Mariners (2,474,924), Ian Kinsler of the Tigers (1,603,185) and Dustin Pedroia of the Red Sox (1,477,800).
Altuve was asked Monday if he thought Cano should start at second base.
"Yes," he said. "I think after Miguel Cabrera, he's one of the best hitters in baseball."
Altuve is just seven hits shy of Bob Watson's Astros franchise record for hits prior to the All-Star break (123 hits set in 1973). In his previous 14 games entering Monday, Altuve was hitting .509 (28-for-55).
"The only thing I'm noticing right now is the way I've been playing," he said. "We're playing really good ball. Every single guy here is giving 100 percent. You guys are tired of hearing the same from me, but we are playing hard, but if we're having good results, we're going to keep doing that until we become the team everybody wants us to be."
