Gordon turns two after terrific sliding catch
Dodgers second baseman juggles ball after over-the-shoulder grab against Reds
CINCINNATI -- Dodgers second baseman Dee Gordon made a spectacular catch in shallow right field to rob Brayan Pena of a hit and double-up Brandon Phillips off second, ending the second inning in Los Angeles' game against the Reds at Great American Ball Park on Wednesday night.
With runners at first and second and one out, Pena hit a pop-up that looked as though it would fall in for a single, but Gordon raced after it and made an over-the-shoulder, sliding catch. He quickly got to his feet, turned and threw in one motion to second to nab Phillips, who had been running on the pitch and never got close to returning to the bag.
The play possibly saved a run or more, ending what may have been a big inning for Cincinnati and preserving a scoreless tie.
