Kazuhisa Ishii of Dodgers voted April NL Rookie of the Month
Kazuhisa Ishii of the Los Angeles Dodgers was overwhelmingly voted the National League Rookie of the Month for April after compiling a 5-0 record with a 3.03 ERA.
The 28-year old Japanese left-hander won all five games he started, pitched 29.2 innings, gave up 22 hits and struck out 34 batters. He became the first Dodgers rookie to win his first five decisions since Fernando Valenzuela in 1981. The Dodgers signed Ishii in February after he played the last 10 years for the Yakult Swallows in the Japanese Central League.
Other rookies receiving votes were pitcher Josh Fogg of the Pittsburgh Pirates, who was 3-0 with a 1.46 ERA in 24.2 innings, and outfielder Austin Kearns of the Cincinnati Reds, who batted .455 with 2 HR and 6 RBI in 11 games.
Ishii will receive a specially designed, engraved award from the T.R. Miller Company to commemorate his Rookie of the Month performance.
