Cincinnati's Austin Kearns named NL Rookie of the Month for May
Austin Kearns of the Cincinnati Reds hit five home runs and collected 17 RBI, to lead all NL rookies and was voted the National League Rookie of the Month for May.
Kearns, who made his Major League debut on April 17, also had four doubles and led all NL rookies in runs scored with 14. He hit .261 (23-for-88) and recorded a slugging percentage of .477 and an on-base percentage of .377. This is the second time a Cincinnati outfielder has won the monthly award, as Adam Dunn shared honors last August with Roy Oswalt of the Astros.
Other outstanding rookies last month who received votes were: Jason Simontacchi of the Cardinals (3-0, 2.73 ERA); Alex Sanchez of the Brewers (.345, 9 SB); Jason Jennings of the Rockies (4-0, 33 SO); April-winner Kazuhisa Ishii (3-1, 2.78 ERA); T.J. Tucker of the Expos (3-0, 2.16 ERA); Carlos Hernandez of the Astros (2-3, 3.23 ERA); Damian Moss of the Braves (2-1, 2.05 ERA); Mark Prior of the Cubs (1-0, 2.25 ERA); and Josh Fogg of the Pirates (3-3, 4.54 ERA).
Kearns will receive a specially designed, engraved award from the T.R. Miller Company to commemorate his Rookie of the Month performance.
