Hideki Matsui named American League Pepsi Rookie of the Month for June

New York Yankees outfielder Hideki Matsui, who batted .394 with six home runs and 29 RBI in June, has been named the American League Pepsi Rookie of the Month.

Matsui led all AL rookies in batting average, hits (41), doubles (11), RBI, walks (15), slugging (.673), and on-base percentage (.484). He had two four-hit games in June and 14 multi-hit efforts overall. Matsui went 4-for-5 with a homer, three doubles, and three RBI at Cincinnati on June 5 and 4-for-4 with two runs and an RBI vs. the New York Mets on June 28 at Shea Stadium. He batted .522 (12-for-23) with three home runs and 10 RBI in six Subway Series games overall, highlighted by his second grand slam of the season on June 28, posting a season-high five RBI in the opener of a two-park doubleheader. Matsui currently is second among AL outfielders in All-Star balloting.

Other rookies who had outstanding months were Cleveland's Jody Gerut (.303, 5 HR, 19 RBI); Detroits Eric Munson (.291, 4 HR, 14 RBI) and Kevin Witt (.282, 3 HR, 11 RBI); Kansas City's Angel Berroa (.327, 5 HR, 11 RBI) and Ken Harvey (.333, 3 HR, 13 RBI); Minnesota's Lew Ford (.359, 2 HR, 9 RBI); Mark Teixeira (tied for AL rookie-high with 6 HR, .264, 14 RBI) of the Rangers; and Toronto's Reed Johnson (.327, 5 HR, 16 RBI, AL rookie-best 24 runs).

Rookie pitchers who excelled in June included Anaheim's Francisco Rodriguez (1.15 ERA, 15.2 IP, 4 H, 16 SO); Jason Davis (3-2, 3.02 ERA, 41.2 IP) of the Indians; Mike MacDougal (2-0, 2.77, 8 saves) of the Royals; Rosman Garcia (1-0, 1.76, 15.1 IP) of the Rangers; and Aquilino Lopez (1-0, 3.60, 2 saves, 15.0 IP) of the Blue Jays.

Matsui will receive a specially designed trophy as the American League Pepsi Rookie of the Month.
