Kansas City's Angel Berroa named American League Pepsi Rookie of the Month for July
Kansas City Royals shortstop Angel Berroa, who led all Major League rookies with six home runs and 22 RBI last month, has been named the American League Pepsi Rookie of the Month for July.
In 26 games, Berroa batted .323 (30-for-93) while posting 15 runs, five doubles, five stolen bases, and a .570 slugging percentage. He had eight multi-hit games, including four three-hit games. Berroa hit a key three-run homer in an 8-3 win at Minnesota on July 23. He hit home runs in three straight games from July 13-18. Berroa is batting .293 on the season with 15 home runs and 53 RBI. Among AL rookies, Berroa ranks second in slugging (.489); is tied for second in home runs, stolen bases (eight), and extra-base hits (40); and is third in multi-hit games (31), runs (56), hits (109), and total bases (182).
Other rookies who excelled in July were Oakland's Rich Harden (2-0, 0.86 ERA, 21.0 IP, 14 H, 16 SO); Detroit's Kevin Witt (.316, 4 HR, 8 RBI); Seattle's Rafael Soriano (1-0, 1.06 ERA, 1 save, 17.0 IP, 8 H, 20 SO); Cleveland's Coco Crisp (Major League rookie-highs with a .351 average and 40 hits), Jody Gerut (.280, 5 HR, 17 RBI), and Billy Traber (2-1, 4.50 ERA, 1 SHO); and Tampa Bay's Rocco Baldelli (.283, 4 HR, 17 RBI, 19 runs).
Berroa will receive a specially designed trophy as the American League Pepsi Rookie of the Month.
