Pirates' Bay named National League Rookie of the Month
Jason Bay of the Pittsburgh Pirates, who hit seven homers and drove in 17 runs in June, has been voted National League Rookie of the Month.
Bay's home run and RBI totals led all National League rookies for the month. His .636 slugging percentage tied for the lead (Humberto Quintero of the Padres). He hit .273 (18-for-66) with a pair of doubles and 14 runs scored in 23 games.
Other rookies receiving votes included: Aaron Miles of the Rockies (.361, 8 RBI); Chris Capuano (2-1, 2.63 ERA, 18 SO) and Mike Adams (1.29 ERA in 14 innings) of the Brewers; Noah Lowry of the Giants (2.04 ERA in 17 innings); Tim Hummel of the Reds (.366, 3 2B, HR); May's National League Rookie of the Month Terrmel Sledge of the Expos (.294, 3 HR, 8 RBI); Eric Valent of the Mets (.242, 6 RBI); Otsuka Akinori of the Padres (1-0, 2.03, 15 SO); and Bay's Pittsburgh teammate Sean Burnett (3.44 ERA,8 SO).
Bay will receive a specially-designed award for being voted National League Rookie of the Month for June.
