Oakland Athletics pitcher Joe Blanton, who won five games last month, has been named the American League Rookie of the Month for June.

Blanton led all A.L. rookies in wins and innings pitched (43.2) during the month of June, going 5-1 with a 2.06 ERA. The 24-year-old right hander pitched at least six innings in each of his six starts last month collecting 28 strikeouts with just nine walks. On June 14th Blanton teamed with A's relievers Kiko Calero and Huston Street in a combined shutout to blank New York (N.L.) 5-0. In his next start, Blanton struck out a career-high seven batters over 7.2 innings in a 5-2 win over Philadelphia. Blanton went eight innings a piece in his final two starts of the month to finish with a four-game personal win streak. The rookie starter was also a close second to Chicago's Mark Buehrle in the race for Pitcher of the Month honors. Blanton is the third Athletic to be named Rookie of the Month since the award was started in 2001.

Other A.L. rookies who made an impact in June were Blanton's Oakland teammate Nick Swisher (.266, 6 HR, 19 RBI), New York second baseman Robinson Cano (.310, 4 HR, 15 RBI), and Seattle shortstop Mike Morse (.357, 1 HR, 9 RBI).

Blanton will receive a specially designed trophy as the American League Rookie of the Month.
