DENVER - In their second transaction of the day, the Colorado Rockies on Wednesday evening acquired OF Eric Byrnes and INF Omar Quintanilla plus cash considerations from the Oakland Athletics in exchange for LHP Joe Kennedy and RHP Jay Witasick. Byrnes will be placed on Colorado's 25-man roster and Quintanilla has been assigned to Class AAA Colorado Springs.

Byrnes, 29, had played all three outfield positions for Oakland this season making 48 starts. The righthanded hitter finished up at the All Star break hitting .266 with seven homers and 24 RBI. A year ago Byrnes put together his best season when he set career highs for average (.283), runs (91), hits (161), doubles, (39) homers (20), RBI (73) and steals (17). Eric was the A's eighth round selection in the June, 1998 draft and made his Major League debut in August, 2000.

Quintanilla, 23, was the A's compensation pick after the first round (33rd selection overall) in the June, 2003 draft. Prior to the trade the lefthanded hitting infielder had played his entire 2005 season at the A's Class AA affiliate in the Texas League, Midland. Playing primarily at shortstop, he was hitting .293 with 4 homers and 25 RBI in 78 games. A lifetime .319 minor league hitter, he finished fourth in the 2004 Arizona Fall League with a .374 average.

Kennedy, 26, was acquired by the Rockies from Tampa Bay in exchange from LHP Mark Hendrickson on December 14, 2003. Joe was 4-8 for the Rockies in 2005 with a 7.04 ERA in 16 games, all starts. He finished the 2004 season with a 9-7 mark and a club record 3.66 ERA in 27 starts. Witasick, 32, was signed to a minor league contract by Colorado on April 9, 2005 after spending spring training with Baltimore. Witasick's contract was purchased by the Rockies on April 29 and in 32 relief appearances he was 0-4 with no saves and a 2.32 ERA.

In another roster transaction, Colorado has placed rookie OF Brad Hawpe on the 15 day disabled list, retroactive to July 10, after he strained his left hamstring in a slide at second base vs. San Diego on July 9. To replace Hawpe on the roster Colorado has purchased the contract of OF Ryan Spilborghs from Class AAA Colorado Springs. Spilborghs, 25, was hitting .355 in 15 games at Colorado Springs after hitting .341 in 71 games at Class AA Tulsa. The righthanded hitting Spilborghs will be making his Major League debut.
