Oakland pitcher Joe Blanton, who allowed just six runs in 46.0 innings pitched during the month of August, has been named the American League Rookie of the Month.

Blanton ranked first among all A.L. pitchers with a 1.17 ERA and sixth with 36 strikeouts while going 3-1 in seven starts. He went at least six innings in each start during the month, including the second complete game of his career on August 31st, striking out a career-high 10 batters in a 2-1 loss to the Angels. On August 1st at Minnesota he gave up one run and two hits through seven innings to beat Johan Santana and the Twins, 2-1. The right-hander did not allow a run in three different starts including August 6th at Kansas City, and consecutive starts on August 21st against Kansas City and on August 26th at Baltimore. Blanton has not allowed more than two earned runs in a start since July 21st at Texas. Blanton has held opponents to a .238 average, good for fifth best in the American League. This is the second A.L. Rookie of the Month Award for Blanton, who also won the award in June.

Blanton beat out his Oakland teammates Huston Street (12 G, 0.64, 9 SV) and Dan Johnson (.287, 6 HR, 19 RBI), who finished second and third, respectively, in the voting. Seattle rookie Felix Hernandez (2-2, 1.84, 44.0 IP) finished fourth.

Blanton will receive another specially designed trophy as the American League Rookie of the Month for August.
