Rob Manfred, Executive Vice President of Labor Relations, issued the following statement today regarding the suspension of Michael Morse:
"We are aware that the Players Association and the player feel that the discipline imposed today is unfair. Our players, however, are well aware that when they use illegal steroids they assume the risk of discipline. Our program is designed to be strict in order to deter the use of illegal performance enhancing substances. Under our program, the Players Association negotiated for a clean slate when a player is promoted from the Minor Leagues to the Major Leagues. That clean slate, however, is a two-way street. If Minor League discipline does not count in determining the severity of the penalty to be imposed for a violation of the Major League Program, then such discipline cannot immunize the player from discipline under the Major League Program."
