Ryan Dempster of the Chicago Cubs was selected as the winner of "DHL Presents the Major League Baseball Delivery Man of the Month Award" for September, it was announced today. The officially-sanctioned Major League Baseball award, which recognizes the most outstanding relief pitcher during each month of the regular season, is part of a sponsorship agreement between Major League Baseball (MLB), Major League Baseball Advanced Media (MLBAM) and DHL, the world's leading express delivery and logistics company, which makes DHL the "Official Express Delivery and Logistics Provider" of both organizations.

Dempster was a perfect 13-for-13 in save opportunities in September allowing no earned runs in 16 games. During the month the Cubs closer struck out 19 batters over 15.2 innings pitched while allowing only five walks. He tied a club record by converting his last 19 save opportunities and he ended the season with a streak of 21.1 scoreless innings, the longest by a Cubs reliever since 1989. Dempster was unscored upon in 47 of his last 55 games, allowing just 11 runs, 39 hits and 26 walks over that span. In addition, he was the first Cubs pitcher to start a game in a season and finish with at least 20 saves. Overall, the right-hander converted 33 saves in 35 chances this season and finished the year 4-0 with a 1.85 ERA in 57 relief appearances.

In recognition of this honor, DHL will donate $1,500 to a local chapter of Boys & Girls Clubs of America, the official charity of Major League Baseball, in Ryan Dempster's name. In addition, Dempster is recognized in a special advertisement appearing in today's issue of USA Today.

The "DHL Presents the Major League Baseball Delivery Man of the Month Award" winner is selected by a special Major League Baseball "yellow-ribbon" panel that includes Hall of Fame pitcher Dennis Eckersley; Darryl Hamilton, former Major League outfielder and MLB Radio Host; Jerome Holtzman, the official MLB Historian and a member of the writer's wing of the Hall of Fame; Rick Sutcliffe, 1984 NL Cy Young Award winner, ESPN and MLB International broadcaster; and Bob Watson, Vice President, On-Field Operations, Major League Baseball.

Previous winners of the monthly award include Jose Mesa of the Pittsburgh Pirates (April), Trevor Hoffman of the San Diego Padres (May), Chad Cordero of the Washington Nationals (June), Brad Lidge of the Houston Astros (July) and Todd Jones of the Florida Marlins (August).

At the conclusion of the season, Major League Baseball fans will have the opportunity to determine which relief pitcher had the best overall season through the "DHL Presents the Major League Baseball Delivery Man of the Year Award." A list of finalists will be selected based on statistical qualifiers and fans will be able to vote for the winner online at MLB.com, the official Web site of Major League Baseball. The "DHL Presents the Major League Baseball Delivery Man of the Year Award" will be presented during the Major League Baseball postseason.
