DALLAS -- The Colorado Rockies announced this morning that they have signed right-handed pitcher Jose Mesa to a one-year contract for 2006 with a club option for 2007. Per club policy, terms were not disclosed.

"We feel that Mesa brings a tremendous amount of talented experience to our bullpen," said Rockies General Manager Dan O'Dowd. "He's pitched in big games and has proven that he is still very effective."

Mesa, 39, has spent the past two seasons with the Pittsburgh Pirates. A veteran of over 15 years in the major leagues, he went 2-8 with a 4.76 ERA (56.2 ip, 30 er) and 27 saves in 55 relief appearances for the Pirates in 2005. Mesa recorded his 300th career save on April 27 vs. Houston as he is one of just 19 pitchers in major league history to surpass that milestone. He matched a Pittsburgh franchise record by converting 23 consecutive save opportunities from Aug. 24, 2004-May 15, 2005.

Twice named to the American League All-Star roster, Mesa has gone 77-101 with a 4.29 ERA in 887 games/95 starts in his career with Baltimore (1987, 1990-1992), Cleveland (1992-1998), San Francisco (1998), Seattle (1999-2000), Philadelphia (2001-03), and Pittsburgh (2004-05). Mesa was with Baltimore and Cleveland during much of the time that O'Dowd was with those organizations. He has made 26 relief appearances in the postseason with Cleveland and Seattle, including 7 World Series outings. Mesa ranks 12th on the all-time list with 319 career saves.

Mesa was not offered arbitration by Pittsburgh last night, meaning that Colorado does not lose any draft picks with this signing.
