ST. LOUIS -- St. Louis Cardinals Senior Vice President/General Manager Walt Jocketty announced today that the Cardinals have agreed to terms with right-handed pitcher Jason Marquis on a one-year contract for 2006, thus avoiding salary arbitration. Terms of the deal were not announced.
The 27-year-old Marquis has a career 42-36 record with a 4.15 ERA in five-plus years in the Majors. He has gone 28-21, 3.92 ERA in his two seasons with St. Louis and pitched a career season high 207.0 IP in 2005. Jason went 4-1 in his last five starts of '05, including two complete games, one a 6-0 shutout at Washington. A career .237 hitter, Marquis batted .310 (27-for-87) with one home run and 10 RBI last season to win the 2005 National League Silver Slugger as a pitcher.
Marquis was acquired from the Atlanta Braves with pitchers Ray King and Adam Wainwright in 2003 in exchange for outfielders J.D. Drew and Eli Marrero. Marquis was the only Cardinals arbitration eligible player this off-season.
