Baltimore Orioles shortstop Miguel Tejada has been named Bank of America Presents the American League Player of the Week for the period ending April 23rd. Bank of America, the Official Bank of Major League Baseball, is the presenting sponsor of the American League and National League Player of the Week Awards, which reflect Bank of America's long-standing tradition of promoting and recognizing higher standards of accomplishment.

Tejada batted .536 (15-28), with three home runs, 10 RBI, an .857 slugging percentage and an American League-leading 24 total bases. The 2002 A.L. Most Valuable Player hit safely in all seven games last week and has a hit in all but three games so far this season. Tejada set the pace for the week on Monday when he homered in the first inning to help beat the Angels, 4-2. On Wednesday, Tejada went 3-for-5 with three runs scored in the 18-9 Baltimore win over Cleveland. In Thursday's rubber match he went deep again, collecting three RBI in a 9-4 win over the Indians. The American League's leading hitter at .425, he finished his stellar week with a 4-for-4 day in New York, including his fourth home run of the season. This is the fifth career weekly award for Tejada (previous: 9/26/04).

Other candidates considered were Tejada's Baltimore teammate Brian Roberts (.478, 6 R, 6 SB); Oakland's Nick Swisher (.353, 4 HR, 8 RBI); and Kevin Mench (.381, 3 HR, 12 RBI) and Michael Young (.440, 5 R, 5 3B) of Texas. Pitchers considered for the award were Jose Contreras (2-0, 1.20 ERA, 15.0 IP) of the Chicago White Sox and Kelvim Escobar (2-0, 3.29 ERA, 14 SO) of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

In recognition of this honor, Tourneau, the world's largest watch store, is proud to award the Bank of America Presents the American League Player of the Week Miguel Tejada with a Tourneau luxury Swiss timepiece.
