Jason Bay of Pirates and Jason Schmidt of Giants voted National League Player and Pitcher of the Month for May
Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Jason Bay, who hit a home run in six straight games from May 22-28, and San Francisco Giants right-hander Jason Schmidt, who was 4-0 and led all N.L. starters with a 1.17 ERA, have been voted National League Player and Pitcher of the Month of May, respectively.
Bay was tied for the league lead with 35 RBI during the month of May. He batted .321 (35-109) with 12 home runs, two doubles, one triple, and two stolen bases. He added a .688 slugging percentage and a .402 on-base
percentage. Jason's 12 home runs set a Pirates club record for the most home runs hit in the month of May. The 2005 N.L. All-Star ended the month with a nine-game hitting streak, including five multi-hit games over that stretch. He becomes the first Pirate to win the award since Barry Bonds captured the award in September 1992.
Schmidt started six games, pitched a total of 46.0 innings and allowed 29 hits, two home runs and seven walks while striking out 35. The Giants ace threw two complete games and one shutout during June. He worked 7.0
innings or more in five of his six starts and added a 10-strikeout performance on May 31st at Florida. Jason held opposing batters to a .174 batting average. This is the second time Schmidt has won the award, the last time being in May 2004.

who notched 10 saves, with a 0.77 ERA and 14 strikeouts. Other players who received votes this past month were Dodgers first baseman Nomar Garciaparra, who hit .375 with four home runs and 28 RBI; Phillies first baseman Ryan Howard, who hit .284 with 13 home runs and 35 RBI;
