New York Mets third baseman David Wright, who led the league with 10 home runs and 29 RBI, and San Diego
Padres right-hander Chris Young, who had the league's lowest ERA among starting pitchers (1.17), have been voted
National League Player and Pitcher of the Month of June, respectively.
A 2006 National League All-Star, Wright also led the league with a .664 slugging percentage. The 23-year old
right-handed slugger batted .327 (35-107) with 20 runs, four doubles, one triple, a .385 on-base percentage and
three stolen bases. He also tied a career record by hitting a home run in three straight games, June 13-15. David
becomes the first Met to earn the honor since fellow third baseman Howard Johnson won in September 1991.
Young went undefeated in June, going 3-0 over his five starts. He pitched 30.2 innings, allowing 16 hits, five
runs, four earned, with 13 walks and 34 strikeouts. The Princeton alumnus set a career-high with a 12-strikeout
game on June 9th vs. Florida. The 6'10" ace, who is tied for second for being the tallest pitcher in Major League
history, did not allow more than two earned runs in any of his starts. This is the first time he has earned the honor.
Other pitchers receiving votes were Milwaukee's Chris Capuano, who went 4-0 with a 2.57 ERA and 35
strikeouts; Florida's Joe Borowski, who went 0-0 with a 0.87 ERA and nine saves, and Dontrelle Willis, who went 4-1
with a 2.51 ERA and 27 strikeouts; Cincinnati's Aaron Harang, who went 4-1 with 2.97 ERA and 34 strikeouts;
Chicago's Carlos Zambrano, who went 3-0 with a 1.96 ERA and 27 strikeouts; and Young's San Diego teammate
Trevor Hoffman, who went 0-0 with a 0.82 ERA and eight saves.
Other players who received votes this past month were Wright's All-Star teammates Jose Reyes, who hit .373
with 28 runs and 14 stolen bases, and Carlos Beltran, who hit .316 with eight home runs and 25 RBI; Dodgers first
baseman Nomar Garciaparra, who hit .371 with four home runs and 11 RBI; Colorado's Garrett Atkins, who hit .316,
with three home runs and 27 RBI, and Jamey Carroll, who hit .361 with 21 runs; St. Louis All-Star Scott Rolen, who
hit .372 with 22 RBI; and Pittsburgh All-Star Freddy Sanchez, who hit .380 with 14 RBI.
David Wright and Chris Young will each receive a specially designed trophy for being voted National League
Player and Pitcher of the Month.
