SAN DIEGO -- The San Diego Padres today reinstated right-handed pitcher Doug Brocail from the 15-day disabled list and optioned right-handed pitcher Scott Cassidy to Triple-A Portland. Executive Vice President/General Manager Kevin Towers made the announcement.

Brocail, 39, was placed on the 15-day disabled list April 1 (retroactive to March 24) after undergoing an angioplasty on March 11. Brocail, who discovered blockage of his left anterior descending coronary artery after undergoing an angiogram during Spring Training, underwent a second angioplasty on April 10. He made six rehabilitation appearances (two starts) with Single-A Lake Elsinore, allowing one unearned run over 6.1 innings while striking out 12.

Brocail went 5-3 with one save and a 5.52 ERA (45 ER/73.1 IP) in 61 games for the Texas Rangers in 2005. His 61 appearances tied the second-highest total of his career and ranked third on the Rangers staff. Over parts of 11 Major League seasons with the Padres (1992-94), Houston Astros (1995-96), Detroit Tigers (1997-2000) and Rangers (2004-05), Brocail has a career record of 37-40 with seven saves and a 4.06 ERA (311 ER/688.2 IP) in 442 games (42 starts).

Cassidy, 30, is 5-4 with a 2.79 ERA in 37 games for the Padres this season. He has recorded 42 strikeouts, tied for the most by a San Diego reliever in 2006, while walking 17 batters.

Cassidy, who was recalled from Portland on April 6, made the Padres Opening Day roster before being optioned to Portland following the club's Opening Day contest on April 3. Over parts of three Major League seasons with the Toronto Blue Jays (2002), Boston Red Sox (2005) and Padres (2005-06), Cassidy has a career record of 7-9 with a 5.05 ERA (66 ER/117.2 IP) in 106 relief appearances.
