Joe Nathan named winner of the "DHL Presents the Major League Baseball Delivery Man of the Month Award" for July

Joe Nathan of the Minnesota Twins was selected as the winner of "DHL Presents the Major League
Baseball Delivery Man of the Month Award" for July, it was announced today. This officially-sanctioned
Major League Baseball award recognizes the most outstanding relief pitcher during each month of the
regular season.
Nathan was a perfect 9-for-9 in save opportunities in July, helping the Twins close the month with
an impressive 18-8 record. He finished with a 0.75 ERA and allowed only one earned run 12 games.
During the month, the Twins stopper struck out 19 batters over 12.0 innings pitched while giving up
just nine hits. The right-hander is coming off back-to-back 40 save seasons becoming only the third
pitcher in Twins history to accomplish that feat. Earlier this season, the two-time All-Star recorded his
100th career save. He is currently 23 for 24 in save opportunities during the 2006 campaign.
In recognition of this honor, DHL will donate $1,500 to Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities (RBI), a
MLB youth outreach program designed to increase participation and interest in baseball, encourage
academic participation and achievement and promote greater inclusion of minorities into the
mainstream of the game of baseball, in Joe Nathan's name. In addition, Nathan will be recognized in a
special advertisement appearing in the August 8 issue of USA Today.
The "DHL Presents the Major League Baseball Delivery Man of the Month Award" winner is selected
by a special Major League Baseball "yellow-ribbon" panel that includes newly elected Hall of Fame
pitcher Bruce Sutter; Lou Piniella, former manager and player; Mike Bauman, national columnist for
MLB.com; Jerome Holtzman, the official MLB Historian and a member of the writer's wing of the Hall of
Fame; and Bob Watson, Vice President, On-Field Operations, Major League Baseball.
At the conclusion of the season, Major League Baseball fans will have the opportunity to determine
which relief pitcher had the best overall season through the second-annual "DHL Presents the Major
League Baseball Delivery Man of the Year Award." A list of finalists will be selected based on statistical
qualifiers and fans will be able to vote for the winner online at MLB.com, the official Web site of Major
League Baseball. The "DHL Presents the Major League Baseball Delivery Man of the Year Award" will
be presented during the Major League Baseball postseason. Last season, Mariano Rivera of the New
York Yankees was named the inaugural recipient of the "DHL Presents the Major League Baseball
Delivery Man of the Year Award."
