Nick Markakis named American League Rookie of the Month for August

Baltimore Orioles outfielder Nick Markakis has been named the American League Rookie of the Month
for August. This is Nick's first Rookie of the Month honors of the season.
In 26 games, Markakis batted .354 (34-96) with 10 home runs and 26 RBI. The 22-year-old rookie
outfielder also had 71 total bases, 22 runs scored, seven doubles and a .740 slugging percentage along
with a .400 on-base percentage. In a game against the Minnesota Twins on August 22, he went 3-for-4
with three home runs. As of September 4, Markakis is batting .304 with 14 home runs and 56 RBI for the
season.
Other A.L. rookies who received consideration were Cleveland pitchers Jeremy Sowers (3-0, 2.78 ERA,
15 SO, 35.2 IP) and Thomas Mastny (0.90 ERA, 4 saves, 12 SO, 10.0 IP) and Minnesota's Pat Neshek (2-
0, 0.59 ERA, 24 SO, 15.1 IP).
Markakis will receive a specially designed trophy as the American League Rookie of the Month.
