Frank Thomas of the Oakland Athletics named Bank of America Presents the American League Player of the Week
Oakland Athletics designated hitter Frank Thomas has been named Bank of America Presents the
American League Player of the Week for the period ending September 10. Bank of America, the Official
Bank of Major League Baseball, is the presenting sponsor of the American League and National League
Player of the Week Awards, which reflect Bank of America's long-standing tradition of promoting and
recognizing higher standards of accomplishment.
Thomas hit .462 (12-26) with a 1.038 slugging percentage, five home runs, 13 RBI and 27 total bases.
In a three-game series against the host Tampa Bay Devil Rays, Thomas went 8-for-12 with three home runs
and eight RBI. Thomas has homered in five straight games from September 5-10. This is his 14th player of
the week award and his first with Oakland. Thomas is the second Oakland player to win weekly honors this
season, joining teammate Mark Kotsay (July 17th).
Other candidates considered included fellow Athletic Nick Swisher (.533, 1.267 SLG, 2 2B, 3 HR, 7 RBI);
shortstop Derek Jeter (.407, 3 2B, HR, 7 RBI) and catcher Jorge Posada (.421, 3 HR, 9 RBI) of the New York
Yankees; and Minnesota Twins pitcher Johan Santana (2-0, 0.00 ERA, 14.1 IP, 23 SO).
