Philadelphia Phillies first baseman Ryan Howard, who led the National League with a .387 (36-93) batting average and a .561 on-base percentage, and Houston Astros right-hander Roy Oswalt, who led the N.L. with a 1.85 ERA and tied for the NL lead with five wins, have been voted National League Player and Pitcher of the Month for September, respectively.

Howard established the new Phillies club record with his 58th home run of the season on September 22. The previous high was 48 home runs set by Hall of Fame third baseman Mike Schmidt in 1980. In 28 games, Howard hit nine home runs and eight doubles, scored 21 runs and collected 20 RBI. He led the NL with a .763 slugging percentage during the month.

Over six starts, Oswalt threw 43.2 innings and allowed 36 hits, nine earned runs and eight walks while recording 39 strikeouts. The right-hander earned his 15th win of the season in his last start on September 28, blanking Pittsburgh in seven innings of work. With the win, he tied Minnesota Twins pitcher Johan Santana for the most wins by a pitcher over the last three seasons (2004-06) with 55. Oswalt concluded the regular season with six consecutive victories and 10 consecutive quality starts.

Other pitchers receiving votes were Florida's Anibal Sanchez, who went 5-1 with a 1.88 ERA, 32 strikeouts and Major League Baseball's only no-hitter of the 2006 season; San Diego's Trevor Hoffman, who had 10 saves with a 1.50 ERA and 13 strikeouts while becoming MLB's all-time saves leader; and Chicago's Rich Hill, who went 3-1 with a 1.93 ERA and 50 strikeouts.

Other players receiving votes were Colorado's Matt Holliday, who hit .333 with 10 home runs and 34 RBI, and Garrett Atkins, who hit .364 with six home runs and 26 RBI; Cardinals first baseman Albert Pujols, who hit .368 with nine home runs and 27 RBI; Houston's Lance Berkman, who hit .330 with nine home runs and 24 RBI; Dodgers shortstop Rafael Furcal, who hit .369 with six home runs and 14 RBI, and utilityman Marlon Anderson, who hit .375 with seven home runs and 15 RBI; Atlanta's Brian McCann, who hit .318 with eight home runs and 27 RBI; and Philadelphia's Chase Utley, who hit .306 with 10 home runs and 22 RBI.

Ryan Howard and Roy Oswalt will each receive a specially designed trophy for being voted National League Player and Pitcher of the Month.
