Froemming sets umpiring mark

Major League Baseball Umpire Bruce Froemming was recognized at last night's game between the
Florida Marlins and the Houston Astros at Houston's Minute Maid Park for setting the record for the most
consecutive years of service (37) by an active umpire in baseball history. Froemming passed the previous
mark, held by Hall of Famer Bill Klem, "The Old Arbitrator," from 1905-1940. Klem is the only umpire with
more games worked than Froemming. The Hall of Famer was on the field for 5,374 games in his career.
"I congratulate Bruce on this terrific achievement," said Baseball Commissioner Allan H. (Bud) Selig.
"Bruce has not only worked longer than any active umpire in the history of baseball, but has worked with
great skill and with great passion. He has had a remarkable career that is appreciated by all of us in
baseball."
Froemming, a native of Milwaukee, has been assigned to the All-Star Game twice, the Division Series
eight times, the League Championship Series 10 times and the World Series five times. The 67-year-old
Froemming worked 13 years in the Nebraska State League, the Midwest League, the Northern League, the
Northwest League, the Texas League and the Pacific Coast League before joining the Major League staff in
1971.
