The Tampa Bay Devil Rays today selected left-handed pitcher David Price with the first overall selection in the 2007 First-Year Player Draft.

Price, 21, went 11-1 with a 2.63 ERA in leading Vanderbilt University to a school record 54-13 mark and a Southeastern Conference Championship. The Commodores were ranked number one in the nation nine consecutive weeks heading into the NCAA regional tournament. He led the nation with a school-record 194 strikeouts (in 133.1 inning pitched), second most in SEC history behind another number one overall pick, Ben McDonald (202 with LSU in 1989). His 11 victories led the SEC and were second most in school history.

He was named Collegiate Baseball's National Co-Player of the Year, the first Vanderbilt player to receive the award. He was also selected SEC Pitcher of the Year as well as a semifinalist for the Golden Spikes (top college player) and Roger Clemens (top college pitcher) awards. In his three-year career at Vanderbilt he posted a 22-10 record with a 3.10 ERA and a school-record 441 strikeouts, shattering the previous mark of 350 by former Toronto Blue Jay Mike Willis, who pitched with Vanderbilt from 1969-72.

In 2006, he led the USA Baseball team to a Gold Medal at the World University Games in Cuba, going 5-1 with a 0.20 ERA (1 ER in 44 IP) and was named Summer Player of the Year by Baseball America. In its most recent edition, Baseball America rated Price as the number one prospect in the draft. In addition the publication ranked him as having the best secondary pitch among college pitchers, having the second best fastball and as being the closest college pitcher to the majors.

This is the third occasion the Rays have had the number one overall selection in the Draft (outfielders Josh Hamilton in 1999 and Delmon Young in 2004).
