Braun, Bannister selected as Rookies of the Month for June
Milwaukee Brewers third baseman Ryan Braun, who led all N.L. rookies with 21 RBI, has been voted the
National League Rookie of the Month for June, while Kansas City Royals pitcher Brian Bannister, who went 5-1
during the month, has earned American League Rookie of the Month honors.
Braun hit six home runs, tying him for first among N.L. rookies while recording a .716 slugging percentage
and a .435 on base percentage. The 23-year old third baseman batted .382 (39-102) with 27 runs, 12
doubles, two triples and four stolen bases. Ryan recorded career-best four-hit performances on June 22nd vs.
Kansas City and June 30th at the Cubs.
In six starts for the Royals, Bannister compiled a 2.75 ERA and he struck out 27 batters in 39.1 innings
pitched. The right-handed pitcher won four consecutive decisions ranging from June 1-17. Brian is currently
5-4 with a 3.58 ERA. This is the first monthly honor of his career; he also received consideration in the A.L.
June Pitcher of the Month balloting.
Reggie Willits of the L.A. Angels of Anaheim (.342, 7 2B, 16 RBI, 7 SB) and Jeremy Guthrie of Baltimore (1-
0, 1.69 ERA, 30 SO) finished tied for second behind Bannister. Also receiving votes was last month's rookie
winner, Dustin Pedroia (.333, 10 2B, 12 RBI) along with Red Sox teammate Daisuke Matsuzaka (2-2, 1.59 ERA,
42 SO, 34.0 IP), Alex Gordon of the Royals (.327, 6 2B, 3 HR, 14 RBI), Travis Buck of the Athletics (.317, 5
2B), and Royals teammate Joakim Soria (0.00 ERA, 11.0 IP, 13 SO).
Other National League rookies receiving votes included Mike Fontenot (.397, 3 HR, 15 RBI) of the Cubs;
James Loney (.440, 3 HR, 14 RBI) of the Dodgers; Troy Tulowitzki (.289, 6 HR, 14 RBI) of the Rockies; and
Hunter Pence (.314, 4 HR, 16 RBI) of the Astros.
Braun and Bannister will receive a specially-designed award for being voted National League
Rookies of the Month for June.
