Hideki Matsui named Sharp Presents the American League Player of the Month for July
New York Yankees outfielder Hideki Matsui has been named Sharp Presents the American League Player of the Month for July.
In 28 games, the two-time A.L. All-Star batted .345 with 39 hits and 28 RBI in 113 at-bats. He led the
league with a .735 slugging percentage, 13 home runs, and 31 runs scored. Among his 18 extra-base hits
last month five were doubles. He walked 14 times and had a .411 on-base percentage. Matsui had an 18-
game hitting streak (July 3-19) and hit safely in 25 of the 28 games in July. He had a five-hit game on July
22nd versus the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. On the last day of the month, Matsui went 2-for-3 with two home
runs and three RBI against the Chicago White Sox.
For the season to date, Hideki Matsui is hitting .293 with 21 home runs and 74 runs batted in. This is
his first career Player of the Month Award. He won the A.L. Rookie of the Month Award in June of 2003.
Others receiving votes were Adrian Beltre of the Mariners (.314, 11 2B, 6 HR, 30 RBI), Justin Morneau
of the Twins (.347, .644 SLG. 6 2B, 8 HR, 28 RBI), Hideki Matsui's teammate, Robinson Cano of the N.Y.
Yankees (.385, 42 hits, 7 2B, 1 3B, 6 HR, 24 RBI) and Mark Grudzielanek of the K.C. Royals (.429, 5 2B, 1 3B,
1 HR, 11 RBI).
