Braun, Butler selected as Rookies of the Month for July
Third baseman Ryan Braun of the Milwaukee Brewers, who led all N.L. rookies with 11 home runs and 25
RBI, has been voted National League Rookie of the Month for July and Kansas City Royals first baseman Billy
Butler, who hit .341 with six doubles, one triple, three home runs and 24 RBI, has been named the American
League Rookie of the Month for July, it was announced today.
Ryan batted .345 (38-110) with 18 runs, 3 doubles and 4 stolen bases. He recorded four 3-hit games during
the month (7/8 at WSH., 7/23 and 7/26 at CIN., 7/28 at STL.) and two multi-home run games (7/6 at WSH. and
7/13 vs. COL.). Ryan becomes the first player to capture both the N.L. Rookie of the Month and Player of the
Month in the same month. It is also his second consecutive Rookie of the Month award.
Tim Lincecum (4-0, 1.62 ERA, 38 SO) of the Giants was the only other rookie receiving votes this month.
Billy Butler slugged .527 and scored 13 runs. During a game against the Seattle Mariners on July 3rd, Butler
went 3-for-5 with a double, a home run, four runs scored and six RBI. On July 20th at Detroit, he went 4-for-5
with a run scored and 4 RBI. For the season Billy Butler is hitting .305 with four home runs and 30 RBI in 42
games. This is the first monthly honor of his career; he was also nominated for A.L. Player of the Month.
Also receiving votes were Kasson Gabbard (3-0, 3.03 ERA, 1 CG - SHO, 20 SO) who was traded from the Red
Sox to the Texas Rangers, Josh Fields of the Chicago White Sox (.265, 4 2B, 6 HR, 15 runs, 18 RBI), Delmon
Young of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays (.343, 9 2B, 11 RBI), Jesse Litsch of the Toronto Blue Jays (3-2, 1.71 ERA,
15 SO), and Hideki Okajima of the Boston Red Sox (0.71 ERA, 9 SO, 12.2 IP).
Ryan Braun and Billy Butler will receive specially-designed awards for being voted the National League and
American League Rookies of the Month for July.
