Bannister, Tulowitzki named August Rookies of the Month

Kansas City Royals hurler Brian Bannister and Colorado Rockies shortstop Troy Tulowitzki have been
named August's Rookies of the Month.
Bannister was 4-1 with a 2.90 ERA in six starts for the Royals. He struck out 16 batters in 40.1 innings
pitched. The 26-year-old rookie right hander went 7.0 innings, allowing one run on six hits in the win against
the Twins on August 7th. On August 17th in Oakland, Bannister pitched a complete game, allowing two runs on
four hits for the win. Bannister is currently 12-7 with a 3.16 ERA and 72 strikeouts. This is his second A.L.
Rookie of the Month honor in 2007 (previous: June) and third time a Royal player has received the award (other:
Billy Butler, July 2007).
Boston's Dustin Pedroia (.346, 9 2B, 2 HR, 12 RBI), Josh Fields (.233, 5 2B, 9 HR, 24 RBI) of the Chicago
White Sox and Joba Chamberlain (0.00 ERA, 11.1 IP, 17 SO) of the New York Yankees also received votes.
Tulowitzki led all N.L. rookies with 40 hits and 25 RBI. The 22-year old shortstop batted .333 (40-120) with
18 runs, 8 doubles and 1 triple. The Long Beach State product recorded 11 multi-hit games, including three 4-hit
games (8/8 vs. MIL, 8/11 at CHI, and 8/20 vs. PIT). He recorded a career-best twelve game hitting streak
stretching from August 16-27.
Other rookies receiving votes included Atlanta's Yunel Escobar (.352, 2 HR, 12 RBI); Milwaukee's Ryan Braun
(.287, 7 HR, 18 RBI); Arizona's Mark Reynolds (.342, 4 HR, 18 RBI) and Micah Owings (1-2, 3.03 ERA, 32 SO);
Philadelphia's J.D. Durbin (3-1, 3.81 ERA, 13 SO); Cincinnati's Norris Hopper (.425, 31 H, 3 RBI) and Jared
Burton (2-0, 1.17 ERA, 15 SO; and Houston's Mark McLemore (3-0, 1.13 ERA, 15 SO).
Bannister and Tulowitzki will each receive a specially designed trophy to commemorate their performances as
Rookies of the Month.
