Andy Pettitte of the New York Yankees was selected by the fans, as the winner of the "Major League
Baseball Clutch Performer of the Month Presented by Pepsi" for August, it was announced today. Andy is the
winner of the officially-sanctioned Major League Baseball award, which recognizes the player who performed
his best when the game was on the line. Pepsi has been the "Official Soft Drink of Major League Baseball"
since 1997.
The "MLB Clutch Performer of the Month Presented by Pepsi" winner is selected by the fans from a list
of six nominees chosen by a special editorial panel from Major League Baseball Advanced Media. During the
first week of each month, fans can visit a microsite hosted by MLB.com that has been created specifically for
the Clutch Performer Platform, pepsiclutch.mlb.com, to vote for the player they believe was the best Clutch
Performer during the previous month.
Pettitte went 6-0 with a 2.36 ERA in six starts, leading the Majors in victories during the month of
August. Andy's six wins also established a career-high for his most victories in a calendar month. When his
team needed him in the clutch, the lefthander defeated four consecutive American League playoff contenders:
Detroit Tigers, Cleveland Indians, Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and Boston Red Sox. As a Yankee, Pettitte
improved to 69-33 in games immediately following a loss. Andy's last victory over the divisional rival Red Sox
catapulted the Yankees into first place in the A.L. Wild Card standings.
At the conclusion of the season, fans will have the opportunity to vote on the "Major League Baseball
Clutch Performer of the Year Presented by Pepsi" award winner at MLB.com, the official Web site of Major
League Baseball. The "MLB Clutch Performer of the Year Presented by Pepsi" award will be presented during
