Major League Baseball Commissioner Allan H. (Bud) Selig issued the following statement today regarding the election of five managers and executives (executives Bowie Kuhn, Barney Dreyfuss and Walter O'Malley and managers Billy Southworth and Dick Williams) to the National Baseball Hall of Fame through the 2008 Veterans Committee election for managers, umpires, executives and pioneers:
"I congratulate the Hall of Fame for electing five new members. I am particularly pleased that former Commissioner Bowie Kuhn is among those who have received this great honor. Bowie was a close friend and a respected leader who served as Commissioner during an important period in history, amid a time of change.
"Walter O'Malley also is deserving of the Hall of Fame. He was one of baseball's leaders for more than three decades and a pioneer who moved the game west of the Mississippi River. I am very happy for Peter O'Malley and the entire O'Malley family. I look forward to seeing my friend, Dick Williams, at Cooperstown next summer, as well as the families and friends of Barney Dreyfuss and Billy Southworth, the other new Hall of Famers.
"I was surprised that Marvin Miller did not receive the required support given his important impact on the game."
