ST. LOUIS -- The St. Louis Cardinals announced today they have signed right-handed pitcher Matt Clement to a one-year contract for 2008 with a club option for 2009.
Clement, 33, has a career 87-86 record with a 4.47 ERA while pitching nine-plus seasons in the Major Leagues with San Diego, Florida, Chicago Cubs and Boston. He had made 30 or more starts in each of his seven full Major League seasons from 1999-2005 before being limited by shoulder problems to just 12 starts for Boston in 2006. Matt was named to the American League All-Star team in 2005 when he jumped out to a 6-0 record with a 3.06 ERA in his first 11 starts and was 10-2 with a 3.85 ERA at the halfway point of the season.
The 6-3, 210-pound pitcher missed the entire 2007 season while rehabbing from arthroscopic right shoulder surgery performed Sept. 26, 2006. He has not appeared in a Major League contest since June 14, 2006, when he prematurely left his start at Minnesota with shoulder discomfort. He did pitch in two simulated games at Fenway Park in September last season as part of his rehab.
"Matt is a very talented pitcher who has been beset by injury the last few years," said Cardinals Vice President/General Manager John Mozeliak. "Based on our findings from his rehabilitation last season and his recent physical, we feel that he can be a solid addition to our starting rotation and should have no limitations upon reporting to Spring Training."
The veteran struck out a career high 215 batters with Chicago in 2002 and set a career high with 14 wins in 2003 with the Cubs, limiting the opposition to a .227 batting average, sixth lowest in the N.L. Matt has made three postseason starts during his career, two with Chicago in 2003 and one start with Boston during the 2005 playoffs.
