PEORIA, Ariz. -- Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Bill Bavasi announced today that the Mariners have asked waivers for the purpose of granting left-handed pitcher Horacio Ramirez his unconditional release.

Ramirez, 28, was 0-0, 5.40 in two games, one start, this spring.

"We did not believe Horacio was going to break camp with us," Bavasi said. "We felt it would be in everyone's best interest to give him time to catch on with another club."

Ramirez spent one season with Mariners, posting an 8-7, 7.16 mark in 20 starts with the Mariners last year. He was on the disabled list with left should tendinitis from May 25-July 16.

Seattle's Major League, 40-man roster now stands at 39 players. Seattle's spring training roster is at 56 (39 roster players + 17 non-roster invitees).
