ARLINGTON -- The Texas Rangers announced today that the club has purchased the contract of right-handed pitcher Doug Mathis from Triple-A Oklahoma. Mathis will be available in the bullpen for today's series finale with Oakland, seeking to make his Major League debut. The club has placed right-handed pitcher Kevin Millwood on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right groin.
Mathis, 24, has spent the entire season with Oklahoma, going 5-0 with a 3.55 ERA (18 ER/45 2/3 IP) in seven games/starts for the RedHawks. He has held Pacific Coast League opponents to a .253 (43-170) average with 10 walks and 30 strikeouts. Mathis has four quality starts at Triple-A, where he won each of his first four starts to begin the season. He last pitched on Tuesday vs. Sacramento, earning the win (eight IP, eight H, three R, two ER, 0 BB, six SO, 115 pitches/76 strikes).
Mathis was a late addition to the club's Major League Spring Training roster in March, posting no record with a 4.15 ERA (two ER/4 1/3 IP) in 5 relief appearances in the Cactus League. The club's 13th round selection in the 2005 June Draft out of the University of Missouri, Mathis is in his fourth professional season. Prior to this season, he had just three games and two starts above the Double-A level.
Millwood left last night's start against Oakland with the groin injury after throwing just 12 pitches. He is eligible to be activated on May 26. The club's Opening Day starter each of the last 3 seasons, Millwood has gone 2-3 with a 4.88 ERA (26 ER/48 IP) in nine games/starts for Texas this season.
Additionally, the club has outrighted right-handed pitcher Kazuo Fukumori, currently at Triple-A Oklahoma, off of the 40-man roster.
With these moves, the Rangers now have 39 players on the club's 40-man roster.
