SAN DIEGO -- The San Diego Padres announced today that the club has signed outfielder Jaff Decker, the team's first pick in the compensation round of the 2008 First-Year Player Draft. Vice President of Scouting & Player Development Grady Fuson and Director of Scouting Bill "Chief" Gayton made the announcement.
Decker, the 42nd overall pick out of Sunrise Mountain High School in Peoria, Arizona, was the Arizona Gatorade Player of the Year after hitting .565 with 17 home runs, 53 RBI, 56 runs scored and 21 stolen bases this season. A left-handed batter and thrower, he also went 9-1 on the mound with a 1.02 ERA and 122 strikeouts in 68.2 innings en route to being named the West Valley Baseball Player of the Year. The 5-foot-10, 190-pound Decker finished his high school career with a .537 average.
