Chavez to undergo season-ending shoulder surgery

OAKLAND -- The Oakland A's today announced that six-time Gold Glove winning third baseman Eric Chavez will undergo season-ending surgery on his right shoulder next week.
Chavez, who ranks among the top 10 in nearly every statistical category on the Oakland Athletics career lists, had been placed on the 15-day disabled list on July 2 with right shoulder inflammation. His shoulder did not respond to light rehab workouts.
In his 11th season with the A's, Chavez had appeared in only 23 games, batting .247 (22 for 89) with two home runs and 14 RBI. The 30-year-old infielder has spent two stints on the disabled list this season and three since July 27 of last year. During his past off-season, he had three surgeries over a 10-week span, including a procedure to repair the labrum in his right shoulder Sept. 5, microdiscectomy surgery on his back Oct. 9 and a left shoulder debridement Nov. 16.
The 6-1, 219-pound veteran has played in 1,279 games in his career, batting .269 (1247 for 4642) with 273 doubles, 20 triples, 229 home runs and 776 RBI. His 273 doubles are an Oakland record, while he ranks fifth in hits, sixth in runs (720) and games played, and seventh in walks (556) among Oakland A's all-time leaders.
He has joined elite company in recent years, both in Oakland and in Major League Baseball. His 11 seasons with the A's are tied for third most in Oakland annals, joining Rickey Henderson (14 seasons), Mark McGwire (12) and Terry Steinbach (11) in that select group. And his six Gold Gloves are fourth most by a third baseman in Major League history, trailing only Brooks Robinson (16), Mike Schmidt (10) and Scott Rolen (7).
