Joe Nathan named winner of the "DHL Presents the Major League Baseball Delivery Man of the Month Award" for July
Joe Nathan of the Minnesota Twins has been selected as the winner of the "DHL Presents the Major
League Baseball Delivery Man of the Month Award" for July, it was announced today. This officially-sanctioned Major League Baseball (MLB) award recognizes the most outstanding relief pitcher during each month of the regular season.
Nathan converted all seven of his save opportunities in July, posting a 0.82 ERA and allowing only three hits and one earned run in his 11 appearances. The right-hander struck out 12 and walked five in his 11.0 innings of work. Nathan's month was highlighted by his July 12th effort at Detroit in which he struck out the side in securing a 6-5 Minnesota win. On the season, Nathan, who has yet to register a decision, has collected 30 saves and a 1.14 ERA. In 47.1 innings, the 33-year-old hurler has scattered 32 hits and 11 walks while fanning 50 batters. The three-time All-Star has now recorded 30 or more saves in each of his five seasons with the Twins. In the 79th Midsummer Classic on July 15th at Yankee Stadium, Nathan retired National League All-Stars Ryan Braun, Nate McLouth and Russell Martin in order in the seventh inning of the American League's eventual 4-3 victory.
In recognition of this honor, DHL will donate $1,500 to the West Side branch of the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Twin Cities in Nathan's name. This donation will be made in conjunction with the Baseball Tomorrow Fund (BTF), a joint initiative of Major League Baseball and the Major League Baseball Players Association. With this donation, the West Side club will have the opportunity to purchase a pitching machine package from ATEC, the official supplier of pitching machines and other training equipment for MLB. In addition, Nathan will be recognized in a special advertisement next week in USA Today.
