DETROIT -- Detroit Tigers righthanded pitcher Armando Galarraga was named the Tigers Rookie of the Year by the Detroit Sports Broadcasters' Association today.
Galarraga led all American League rookie pitchers with 13 wins and 126 strikeouts, while he was third with a 3.73 ERA (178.2IP/74ER) during his first season with the Tigers. He ranked second among all league pitchers with a .226 batting average against and 7.66 hits per nine innings.
In addition to his rank among the league leaders, his 126 strikeouts rank as the second-most by a rookie pitcher in Tigers history. The total is the most ever by a Tigers rookie righthanded pitcher, surpassing the previous mark of 124 strikeouts established by Justin Verlander in 2006.
Galarraga will be presented with his award prior to a Tigers home game during the 2009 season. The Detroit Sports Broadcasters' Association has been selecting a Tigers Rookie of the Year since 1969.
