The St. Louis Cardinals agreed to terms today with pitcher Todd Wellemeyer and outfielder Chris Duncan, avoiding salary arbitration with both players. Financial terms of the contracts were not released.

Wellemeyer and Duncan represent two of the team's five arbitration eligible players. Outfielders Ryan Ludwick, Rick Ankiel and pitcher Brad Thompson have yet to sign.

Wellemeyer, 30, enjoyed a break-out season in 2008, going 13-9 with a 3.71 ERA in his first season as a full-time starter. Wellemeyer earned National League Pitcher of the Month honors in May (4-0, 2.19 ERA) and he held opposing batters to a .245 batting mark for the season (15th in the N.L.).

Wellemeyer owns a career mark of 22-19 with a 4.42 ERA in 167 games (43 starts).

Duncan, 27, had an injury-shortened 2008 season that resulted in season-ending cervical disc replacement surgery on August 4. He batted .248 with 6 home runs and 27 RBI in 76 games. Duncan has compiled a .266 career batting mark with 50 HR's and 143 RBI in 302 games. He and Albert Pujols are the only Cardinals to begin their careers with consecutive 20-homer seasons.
