FLUSHING, N.Y., April 3, 2009 - The New York Mets today announced that they have come to an agreement with Gary Sheffield for the 2009 season pending a physical.

Sheffield, 40, is a nine-time All-Star and is one home run shy of 500. He was released by the Detroit Tigers on March 31st. Sheffield has a career .292 batting average with 1,633 RBI, including eight 100-RBI seasons.

Sheffield, who has captured five Louisville Silver Slugger Awards, hit .225 with 16 doubles, 19 home runs and 57 RBI in 114 games with the Tigers in 2008. He hit 25 home runs and drove in 75 runs in 133 games in 2007 with Detroit.
