Josh Johnson of the Florida Marlins named the National League Player of the Week presented by Bank of America

Right-hander Josh Johnson, who posted a 2-0 record in the opening week of the 2009 season for the 5-1 Florida Marlins, has been named National League Player of the Week presented by Bank of America for the period ending April 12. From April 5-12, Johnson recorded a 0.57 ERA, allowing just one earned run in 15.2 innings pitched. The 6'7" Johnson struck out 15 batters while allowing just 12 hits and one walk. On April 7th vs. Washington, Josh threw 6.2 scoreless innings, fanning eight. On April 12th vs. the New York Mets, the 24-year-old Johnson brought a shutout into the ninth inning as part of a 2-1 Florida win. Johnson struck out seven and yielded one walk as he officially registered MLB's first complete game of the 2009 season; later on Sunday, Aaron Harang of the Cincinnati Reds and Kyle Lohse of the St. Louis Cardinals also went the distance in their shutout wins. Other nominees this past week included Johnson's Florida teammates Emilio Bonifacio (.500, 14 H, 5 RBI), Jorge Cantu (.368, 2 HR, 7 RBI) and Hanley Ramirez (.348, 2 HR, 9 RBI); Ryan Church (.478, 6 2B, 2 RBI), Carlos Delgado (.391, 1 HR, 8 RBI) and Johan Santana (0.71 ERA, 12.2 IP, 20 SO) of the Mets; Philadelphia's Pedro Feliz (.438, 3 2B, 4 RBI), Chase Utley (.556, 1 HR, 5 RBI) and Jayson Werth (.368, 1 HR, 5 RBI); Atlanta's Yunel Escobar (.429, 1 HR, 5 RBI), Kelly Johnson (.421, 2 HR, 6 RBI) and Jair Jurrjens (2-0, 2.45 ERA, 3 SO); Chicago's Kosuke Fukudome (.409, 2 HR, 4 RBI), Alfonso Soriano (.286, 4 HR, 7 RBI) and Ryan Theriot (.550, 3 2B, 3 RBI); Joey Votto (.400, 2 HR, 7 RBI) and Aaron Harang (0.64 ERA, 14.0 IP, 11 SO) of the Reds; Pittsburgh's Nyjer Morgan (.423, 11 H, 5 RBI); Albert Pujols (.375, 3 HR, 9 RBI), Chris Carpenter (1-0, 0.00 ERA, 7 SO) and Kyle Lohse (2-0, 1.13 ERA, 8 SO) of the Cardinals; Colorado's Troy Tulowitzki (.842 SLG, 3 HR, 5 RBI) and Ubaldo Jimenez (1-0, 0.00 ERA, 8 SO); James Loney (.370, 10 H, 4 RBI) of the Dodgers; San Diego's Chris Young (2-0, 1.38 ERA, 12 SO); and San Francisco's Fred Lewis (.450, 1 3B, 1 RBI).
