All-Star third baseman Evan Longoria of the Tampa Bay Rays has been named the Sharp Presents the American League Player of the Month for April. This marks Evan's first career monthly award honor.

In 21 games last month, Longoria batted .369 (31-84) with six home runs and finished tied with teammate Carlos Peña for the American League high with 24 RBI. Evan's 24 RBI ties him for the club record of most by any player in the month of April. The 23-year-old third baseman scored 17 runs and tied for the Major League-best with a .714 slugging percentage. Longoria led the Majors in doubles (11), extra-base hits (17) and total bases (60). In addition to his 31 hits, Evan walked eight times and posted a .419 on-base percentage. To begin the season, the 2008 A.L. Rookie of the Year put together a 10-game hitting streak from April 7th-18th, which included six multi-hit games. During that streak, Evan homered in three straight games and collected five home runs over a five-game span. He also had eight multi-RBI efforts last month and reached base in 19 of his 21 games.

The runner-up was Boston Red Sox first baseman Kevin Youkilis, who batted .369 (30-76) with eight doubles, five home runs, 20 runs scored and a Major League-leading .505 on-base percentage. Others receiving votes were Toronto Blue Jays second baseman Aaron Hill (.365, 6 2B, 5 HR, 17 R, 20 RBI), Longoria's Rays' teammate Peña (.256, 9 HR, 24 RBI, 14 R) and New York Yankees second baseman Robinson Cano (.366, 5 2B, 5 HR, 18 R, 16 RBI).
