Seattle Mariners director of scouting Tom McNamara announced today that the club selected 27 players on the second day of Major League Baseball's annual June draft. Rounds 4 to 30 were conducted today. The draft will conclude with Rounds 31-50 tomorrow.

In the first 30 rounds, the Seattle Mariners selected 32 players -- including 14 pitchers, four catchers, nine infielders and five outfielders. Of the 18 position players selected, nine are left-handed hitters and three are switch-hitters. Seattle selected 27 college players and five high school players. High school picks included rounds 1, 1A, 14, 24 and 28.

The Mariners selected three players with ties to the Northwest. Seattle's 14th-round pick was outfielder Adam Nelubowich, from Vauxhall H.S. in Stony Plain, Alberta, Canada. The 15th round selection was left-handed pitcher Blake Keitzman, from Western Oregon University in Roseburg, OR. And in the 20th round, the Mariners selected left-handed pitcher Jonathan Hesketh. Hesketh attends the Univ. of New Mexico, but his hometown is Langley, B.C., Canada.

Sixth-round pick Shaver Hansen is the son of a (retired) pro wrestler. Seventh-round selection Brian Moran is the nephew of former big leaguer BJ Surhoff, and ninth-round pick Trevor Coleman's dad was pro tennis player Brad Coleman. The Mariners 28th-round selection, Regan Flaherty, is the son of U. of Southern Maine head coach Ed Flaherty. Coach Flaherty has won two National Championships, and is a member of three coaching Hall of Fames. Regan's brother, Ryan Flaherty, was drafted by the Cubs last year.

Yesterday's picks included Seattle's first overall pick, outfielder Dustin Ackley (second overall). The Mariners selected high school shortstop Nick Franklin with the 27th overall pick in the first round. Seattle took high school catcher Steven Baron with the first selection (#33 overall) in the compensation round. Seattle's second-round pick was first baseman Rich Poythress from the Univ. of Georgia, and its third-round selection was second baseman Kyle Seager, Ackley's teammate at the Univ. of North Carolina.

Here are the Mariners first 32 selections. Rounds 4-30 were held today. The draft will conclude with rounds 31-50 on Thursday:
