Atlanta Braves pitcher Tommy Hanson has been voted the June recipient of the Gillette presents National League Rookie of the Month Award.

Hanson went 4-0 with a 2.48 ERA over five starts in June, his first five starts in the Majors. In 29.0 innings, he permitted eight earned runs on 24 hits with 17 walks and 18 strikeouts while holding opposing hitters to a .222 batting average. The 22-year-old collected his first big-league victory on June 12th at Baltimore, allowing two runs and nine hits over 5.2 innings. Hanson did not allow a run over his last three starts on June 18thrd at Cincinnati, June 23 against the Yankees and June 28th against Boston. In his final start against Boston, the Tulsa, Oklahoma native permitted a career-best two hits over 6.0 innings with two walks and two strikeouts. The six shutout innings brought his scoreless streak to 20 innings, the longest for a Braves rookie starter since Pete Smith in 1988 (also 20 innings). In addition, Hanson is the first Braves rookie pitcher in the modern era (since 1900) to hold his opponents scoreless in each of three consecutive starts, and he is the second Braves pitcher since 1900 to post a record of 4-0 or better over his first five Major League games, joining Larry McWilliams, who was also 4-0 in 1978.

Others rookies receiving votes included Milwaukee Brewers second baseman Casey McGehee (.368, 8 2B, 5 HR, 18 RBI); Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Andrew McCutchen (.284, 4 2B, 5 3B, 1 HR, 18 RBI, 4 SB); and right-hander Jordan Zimmermann (1-1, 1.90, 23.2 IP, 22 SO) of the Washington Nationals.
